Apple has significantly revamped iOS 27 for the iPhone Duo, redesigning controls and app layouts to take advantage of the foldable phone’s larger, dual-screen design.
How iOS 27 adapts to the iPhone Duo
iOS 27 moves traditional controls to the side when the phone is open so they remain easy to reach with your thumb, and the system adjusts every app’s layout to use the increased interior screen area and the wider external aspect ratio. The iPhone Duo shows two home screens when open: Today View, a scrollable list of widgets, appears on the left, while standard app icons occupy the right. To maximize vertical space, status icons such as Wi‑Fi and the clock shift from a conventional status bar to the top-right corner.
Standby mode and Apple Pencil support
iOS 27 includes a unique standby mode for the Duo that turns the device into a smart display when placed in a tent orientation, showing full-screen widgets like calendar and weather or functioning as a digital photo frame. The iPhone Duo is also the first iPhone to support the Apple Pencil on both the outer and inner displays; Apple’s press release says Apple Pencil with USB-C will be supported “later this year,” although the feature might not be available at launch.
Design considerations for a foldable iPhone
Because the iPhone Duo introduces multiple and flexible screens, Apple adapted iOS 27 to work across varied orientations and poses. When the inner display is partially open like a book, iOS 27 shifts content away from the fold to keep it visible. The phone can also be folded into a tent and placed on a table to play videos on the external screen. Apple said the iPhone Duo was designed to be “as natural and intuitive as iPad,” and the company drew on multitasking experience from iPadOS, which was originally built on iOS, rather than starting from scratch.
