A third-party developer posted a short video showing the iPhone Duo transition animation running on a Galaxy Z Fold 8 less than 24 hours after Apple’s presentation, but the demo is a proof of concept rather than a functioning One UI launcher.
The clip, shared on Reddit by a user going by the handle moomanjohnny, reproduces the smooth folded-to-unfolded animation that Apple showcased. It looks impressive and was created quickly, but the underlying implementation is not an integrated system animation.
Instead of modifying Samsung’s SystemUI or One UI, the app combines a shader, two screenshots (one for each home screen), and the hinge sensors built into the Galaxy Z Fold 8 to create an illusion. As the creator explains: “This isn’t the real SystemUI. Samsung doesn’t provide the necessary access for us to build this as a third-party app. This is a proof-of-concept, not a real launcher.”
Galaxy Z Fold 8 hinge shows potential
The most significant takeaway is that the Fold 8’s hinge appears to have sufficiently accurate sensors to drive a smooth transition animation in theory. That hardware capability suggests Samsung could implement a similar effect at the system level if it chose to.
In practice, however, third-party developers face a hard limitation: lacking access to the SystemUI, they cannot produce a true launcher that reproduces the effect for the actual home screen. Whether Samsung will leverage the hinge sensors to add comparable animations to One UI remains unknown.
The demonstration nonetheless serves as a vivid example of what Apple’s animations could look like on a Galaxy Z Fold 8 and shows what might be possible if software access and integration were available. For now, it remains an impressive technical mock-up rather than a usable replacement for Samsung’s home screen.
