Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max build on last year’s models with a series of targeted upgrades focused on performance, camera capabilities, battery life and faster wired charging. If you own an iPhone 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max, the differences are evolutionary rather than a full redesign.
iPhone 18 Pro performance improvements
The new A20 Pro chip replaces the A19 Pro, delivering up to 20% faster CPU performance and 40% faster GPU performance. The GPU moves from six cores to seven cores, and AI processing is twice as fast thanks to a new Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple also redesigned the vapor chamber with three times the surface area, enabling up to 40% better sustained performance.
Camera upgrades and new controls
The Main camera receives a variable-aperture 48MP system with settings at ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4, replacing the fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture on iPhone 17 Pro models. Apple says the Main camera offers around 50% better low-light performance. New manual controls let users set aperture, shutter speed, white balance and view a histogram. Apple adds an Apple Reference Image feature for creating authenticated, unalterable reference photos, and Photographic Styles 3 introduces texture and grain controls. Cinematic effects can now be applied after capture to video shot at up to 60 fps, and Cinematic mode supports up to 4K Dolby Vision at 60 fps (up from 30 fps). Time-lapse recording is upgraded to 4K Dolby Vision, and low-light video recording is improved at 1080p. New smart focus tracking and an Improved Audio Mix with higher-quality voice processing and music isolation are also included.
Display, charging and storage
Key display specifications remain the same: 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch sizes with 3,000-nit peak outdoor brightness. Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras remain 48MP, with 4x Telephoto and 8x optical-quality zoom. MagSafe and Qi2 charging remain capped at 25W, but wired charging is faster: Apple says the phones reach 50% charge in around 15 minutes, down from about 20 minutes on the previous models. Storage reaches a new 2TB option on the 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro, up from a 1TB maximum.
Design, sizes, weight and colors
The overall industrial design is largely unchanged aside from a smaller Dynamic Island that can display up to three Live Activities at once. The iPhone 18 Pro is 5 g heavier than its predecessor, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max is 16 g heavier. New finishes are Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy, replacing Silver, Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue.
Battery life, pricing and availability
Battery life for video playback improves to up to 36 hours on iPhone 18 Pro (up from 33 hours) and up to 45 hours on iPhone 18 Pro Max (up from 39 hours). The starting price is $100 higher: $1,199 for iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for iPhone 18 Pro Max. Pre-orders begin Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time / 8 a.m. Eastern Time, with general availability on Friday, September 18.
