Apple’s iPhone Duo and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 share the same passport-style foldable form factor but reflect very different design priorities, notably in materials, weight and thickness. Apple has used a titanium frame for the iPhone Duo, while Samsung opts for an Armor Aluminum frame; Samsung’s Fold 8, focused on thinness and lightness, remains—according to independent durability tests—an incredibly strong foldable.
Weight: iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8
The two phones diverge sharply on the scales. The iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams, making it the heaviest iPhone ever—5 grams heavier than the non-foldable iPhone 18 Pro Max. By contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 weighs 201 grams, the lightest Fold model ever made and even lighter than some premium non-foldables such as the Galaxy S26 Ultra (214g).
Thickness and profiles
Thickness figures further underline the different approaches. The iPhone Duo measures 11.3 mm when folded and 5.2 mm when unfolded; unfolded, it is only about half a millimeter thinner than the non-foldable Galaxy S25 Edge (5.8 mm). The Galaxy Z Fold 8 measures 9.7 mm folded and 4.5 mm unfolded. Its pricier sibling, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, weighs a little more (215g) but reaches an even slimmer 4.1 mm when unfolded.
Taken together, these measurements show two distinct philosophies: Apple prioritizes different materials and a heavier build, while Samsung emphasizes thinness and lightness. That does not make one formula inherently better, but if thinness and lightness are your priorities in a foldable that can become a tablet, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 clearly has the advantage.
