Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Duo, is a clear rival to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 but does not directly match the higher-end Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The two phones occupy the same passport-style category, share similar foldable screen sizes and a close US price point, while the Fold 8 Ultra remains a larger, more capable alternative that Apple has not yet countered.
Why the iPhone Duo matches the Galaxy Z Fold 8
The iPhone Duo and Galaxy Z Fold 8 share a short-and-wide passport-style design, both using 7.6-inch foldable inner displays, shorter/wider cover screens and two rear cameras. Their US launch prices are separated by about $100: the Fold 8 starts at $1,899 and the iPhone Duo at $1,999. Both devices target similar buyers whose use cases — watching video, gaming and reading — benefit from wider inner screens.
Why the Fold 8 Ultra stands apart
Samsung also sells a larger, more traditional book-style foldable above the standard Fold 8: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The Ultra has an 8-inch inner display and a 6.5-inch cover screen, compared with the iPhone Duo’s 7.6-inch and 5.4-inch displays. That taller unfolded orientation fits vertically oriented apps — social feeds, websites, email — more naturally, without the user needing to rotate the device for more vertical content.
Camera and imaging differences
The Fold 8 Ultra also has a more capable rear camera array than either the Fold 8 or iPhone Duo: a 200MP main camera, a 50MP ultrawide and a dedicated 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom. The standard Fold 8 uses two 50MP cameras and lacks a telephoto lens. The iPhone Duo uses two 48MP cameras and relies on cropping from its main sensor for 2x optical-quality zoom. Sensor resolution alone does not determine final image quality, and software can only partially substitute for a dedicated optical zoom camera.
Size, weight, thickness and battery
Despite larger displays and an extra rear camera, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is substantially thinner and lighter than the iPhone Duo: the Ultra weighs 215 grams versus the Duo’s 254 grams (39 grams lighter), and measures 8.9mm folded / 4.1mm unfolded compared with the Duo’s 11.3mm / 5.2mm. Samsung’s standard Fold 8 remains its lightest option at 201 grams. The Ultra also carries a 5,000mAh battery versus the Fold 8’s 4,800mAh; Apple, however, claims longer video playback for the Duo, so battery life is not a straightforward advantage for Samsung.
Other Samsung advantages and multitasking
Many Samsung software and hardware features are available across both Fold 8 models and represent advantages over the iPhone Duo. One UI supports three apps in split-screen mode and floating pop-up windows; Apple’s foldable is limited to two apps side by side. The Fold 8 Ultra supports Samsung DeX, reverse wireless charging, physical SIM cards, face recognition in addition to fingerprint scanning, and 8K video recording. The Ultra can also remain open at different angles, providing proper Flex Mode functionality similar to the iPhone Duo, while the standard Fold 8 lacks that capability.
Where the iPhone Duo wins
The iPhone Duo brings features Samsung’s Ultra does not offer: an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, Apple Pencil support, an under-display camera, and a nano-texture finish that reduces reflections and gives the large display a paper-like feel at the expense of some contrast. Apple also claims longer battery life and may deliver a more polished and consistent software experience, though its multitasking remains more limited than Samsung’s.
Apple’s first foldable is a serious competitor to the Galaxy Z Fold 8, but at $1,999 it directly competes with the $1,899 Fold 8 rather than the $2,099 Fold 8 Ultra. For an additional $100 over the iPhone Duo’s price, Samsung’s Fold 8 Ultra offers larger displays, a dedicated telephoto camera and a 200MP main sensor, a thinner body and a form factor that better suits productivity and vertically scrolling apps — features Apple has not yet matched.
