Galaxy Z Fold 8: How Samsung Cut Weight to 201 Grams

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the lightest Fold Samsung has made, weighing just 201 grams, and the company credits three engineering innovations for that achievement. According to Samsung, a 2024 survey that found bulky, heavy design was a top concern for non-buyers — while battery life, display quality and durability were priorities for buyers — shaped a core engineering goal: make foldables thinner and lighter without sacrificing the core experiences users value most.

Galaxy Z Fold 8: Precision engineering

Samsung identifies three precision-engineering advances that helped cut weight: the introduction of an ultra-thin Flex Titanium layer in the display stack, an improved titanium metal backplate and a refined hinge design. Flex Titanium is described as an ultra-thin layer roughly one-third the width of a human hair that adds rigidity and helps conceal the crease while limiting added thickness and mass. The flexible display assembly rests on a titanium backplate that debuted with the Galaxy Z Fold 7; for the Fold 8, Samsung says it refined the manufacturing process for metal plates machined at around 0.2mm to control shape and flatness by improving machining sequence, tooling, cooling conditions and process parameters. For the hinge, Samsung says engineers optimized individual components for balanced load distribution, strength, durability, internal space and weight rather than simply scaling parts down from prior generations.

New materials

Material changes also contributed to the lighter Fold 8. Samsung lists Flex Titanium with a Titanium Alloy Film, graphite with improved thermal performance and a graphite heat-dissipation layer that is 7% larger in volume than the Fold 7’s, an Advanced Armor Aluminum frame, and Clad Metal inside the rear of the device to reduce weight while providing thermal performance.

Component-level redesigns

With limited internal space and a focus on durability, Samsung reviewed and redesigned hundreds of parts. The company examined approximately 270 components and more than 180 types of auxiliary parts, eliminated about 15 auxiliary parts, consolidated some parts into single structures and reduced the weight of certain auxiliary pieces to as little as 0.001 grams. Samsung also redesigned the PCB to remove unnecessary circuits and improve component layout, and reimagined the MFC (Magnetic Flux Channel) antenna to reduce unnecessary overlap and interference with surrounding components.

After these efforts, Samsung achieved a 201-gram weight and a 4.5mm thickness for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, a notable reduction compared with the Galaxy Z Fold 2 at 282 grams. Samsung notes this was accomplished despite adding a new, larger silicon-carbon battery that increased weight by approximately 6 grams. The Fold 8’s reduced mass has been highlighted as one of its key advantages over the iPhone Duo.
