China has stepped up efforts to recover rocket stages, but it has not yet relaunched a recovered booster, underscoring limits in the country’s push for reusable rockets.

US commercial firm SpaceX has widely promoted its use of reusable first-stage boosters, saying it has flown more than 600 missions with those cost-reducing components. By contrast, despite a succession of breakthroughs in booster-recovery efforts in recent months—both on land and at sea—China has not reused a recovered rocket.
The gap between Beijing’s space ambitions and the technical and operational challenges of reusing boosters remains clear. Recent recovery successes demonstrate progress, but the absence of an actual relaunch of a recovered stage highlights how far China still is from matching the reusable-launch capabilities that currently give the US a tremendous lead.
