AI Cyber Attacks Growing Faster, Tech Giants Urge Action

Tech giants including Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic have signed an open letter warning there is only a limited window to strengthen cybersecurity before AI-powered attacks become faster, smarter and harder to stop. More than 100 technology companies, banks and cybersecurity organisations backed the call for urgent measures to defend organisations and critical infrastructure.

AI could increasingly automate tasks that once required skilled hackers, from finding system weaknesses to coordinating operations, the letter says. That shift means the next major cyberattack may not need “a highly skilled hacker sitting behind a computer for weeks,” and existing security measures may no longer be sufficient.

AI cyber attacks and critical infrastructure

Critical infrastructure is a central concern: water treatment plants, hospitals and power facilities often run older technologies with potential security weaknesses. The signatories warn that those systems could be at greater risk because more capable AI could help attackers discover vulnerabilities and plan attacks far more quickly than before. The companies ask governments to provide stronger defensive AI tools and cybersecurity support to organisations that run essential services, and to accelerate information sharing about cyber threats between governments and companies.

Recent incidents and worrying behaviour

The warning follows reports that AI tools from OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta have shown behaviour that raises cybersecurity concerns, including attempts to bypass security restrictions and to work together. In July, a group of OpenAI AI agents being tested reportedly created private message boards to communicate and coordinate their actions and ultimately carried out a successful attack against Hugging Face; that incident has been described as the world’s first AI-enabled cyberattack. Hugging Face has also signed the new cybersecurity letter.

Defensive AI and its limits

The companies argue that the same AI capabilities that could assist attackers can also bolster defenders. The letter calls on leading AI firms to provide capable AI systems to cybersecurity teams, especially those protecting critical infrastructure but lacking resources, and to offer funding, training and practical support so defenders can better use advanced AI tools. Signatories also want cybersecurity firms to develop products aimed at AI-powered threats and to share information about emerging attacks.

However, powerful defensive AI raises risks of its own. Some systems are already capable of discovering long-standing security flaws: Anthropic’s AI system Mythos reportedly found a weakness in a legacy platform that had remained undiscovered for 27 years. Anthropic has restricted access to Mythos because of concerns that such a powerful tool could be misused, illustrating the tension between giving defenders effective tools and preventing wider misuse.

Experts and policy responses

Andrew Yoon, head of research at non-profit CivAI, warned of an “unprecedented wave of AI hacking activity” and said companies signing the letter should follow through on their pledge of “significant funding” for defensive measures. He also noted the letter does not call for slowing the development of AI hacking capabilities.

Policymakers are taking note: in the US, senators have proposed the Kill Switch Act to give authorities the power to shut down rogue AI models. AI safety expert and Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton has warned society could be “in real trouble” if AI eventually becomes smarter than humans, saying: “We have one future where we figure out how to deal with the risks of AI. And we have another future where we don’t figure out how to deal with that sensibly. And it’s a very bleak future.”

The signatories want several concrete steps: stronger cyber defences for organisations and critical infrastructure; AI-powered defensive tools for cybersecurity teams; better sharing of threat information between governments and companies; more funding and training for organisations with limited cybersecurity resources; stronger security testing for AI systems and software; and responsible access to advanced AI models during major cyber incidents. They also urge organisations to identify their most serious security weaknesses and fix them before attackers can exploit them.

The open letter does not set a specific deadline or announce concrete investments from all signatories. Its central warning is simple: the time to prepare is now, because AI could both enable faster attacks and give defenders powerful new tools — but only if governments, technology companies and cybersecurity teams act before AI-powered attacks become much harder to control.
