Code uncovered in the iOS 27 Release Candidate shows a new way to redeem Apple gift cards by tapping them on the back of a compatible iPhone.
Apple gift cards tapping flow
Aaron Perris, who examined the code, says Apple’s gift cards will include a security chip that the iPhone will scan to verify the card is authentic and unspent. The verification is performed by the device when the physical card is placed against the iPhone’s back.
The redeem flow in the code includes screens that display “this card has been blocked” or “cancelled,” wording that appears intended to reduce attempted scams. These messages are part of the on-device flow revealed in the Release Candidate code.
