Apple Pencil Works with iPhone Duo — USB‑C Model Only

The iPhone Duo supports the Apple Pencil, but only the USB‑C model; Apple Pencil 1, Apple Pencil 2 and Apple Pencil Pro are not compatible. Support for Apple Pencil on the iPhone Duo is being added in iOS 27.2, which is currently available in beta.

Apple Pencil compatibility and pairing

The iPhone Duo must be paired with the USB‑C Apple Pencil using a USB‑C cable. Unlike the Apple Pencil Pro, which attaches and pairs magnetically to iPads, the Duo requires a wired pairing process. The USB‑C Apple Pencil is listed at $79 from Apple and is available for $69 from Amazon.

How the Apple Pencil behaves on the Duo

Once paired, the Apple Pencil works on the iPhone Duo much as it does on an iPad: you can write and draw, and there is a setting to enable palm rejection. The Pencil functions on both the inner and outer displays. It can attach magnetically to the Duo’s hinge for storage, but that magnetic attachment does not provide charging.

Limitations and display care

The USB‑C Apple Pencil lacks pressure sensitivity, double‑tap and squeeze features that the Apple Pencil Pro offers. The Pencil tip can leave visible lines on the Duo’s display, but those marks wipe away with a polishing cloth and are unlikely to cause permanent damage. Apple offers an iPhone Duo cover layer replacement priced at $19 with AppleCare+ and $49 without AppleCare+.

For quick notes or simple sketches on the iPhone Duo, the USB‑C Apple Pencil may be worth the expense, though its usefulness is constrained by the device’s limited screen size compared with an iPad.
