The Galaxy Z Fold series and the S Pen were once seen as a perfect pairing. Initially, integrating the S Pen with the Fold seemed challenging until Samsung achieved it with the Galaxy Z Fold 3. However, the integration was never seamless, and now the S Pen is essentially phased out.
The release of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 last year marked a shift in Samsung’s foldable strategy, as it completely eliminated S Pen support. In significant markets like the USA, the connection between the Fold and the S Pen has largely disappeared.
Enthusiasts who favored the S Pen with their Fold devices are finding their options dwindling. The specialized S Pen required for these devices, featuring a softer tip and a unique digitizer frequency, is increasingly scarce. Samsung USA no longer offers the S Pen Fold Edition or any compatible accessories, with only an out-of-stock S Pen case for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 remaining listed.
This situation is particularly inconvenient as older Fold models are still available for purchase, but without their corresponding S Pen accessories. Those buying a refurbished Galaxy Z Fold 5 or 6 from Samsung USA are left without these once-optional extras.
On a brighter note for foldable phone enthusiasts, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 boasts significant improvements in other areas, and its early sales figures indicate that most consumers are not lamenting the absence of the S Pen. The Fold 7 has been well-received and is considered a success.
Looking ahead, Samsung is preparing to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra at an upcoming event. With their introduction, the S Pen’s association with the foldable segment will become even more of a distant memory.
