Quick Share, the default wireless file-sharing system on Samsung Galaxy devices, has recently been found to have several security vulnerabilities. These issues, similar to those identified in Apple’s AirDrop, have raised concerns about potential data theft. However, users need not worry about their personal data being stolen through these vulnerabilities.
The flaws allow an attacker within approximately 30 meters to disrupt Quick Share’s functionality by crashing background processes, a type of denial-of-service (DoS) attack. This does not grant access to personal files on the device.
Tests conducted on a Galaxy S23 Ultra revealed these vulnerabilities, and while Apple and Google have started addressing similar issues on their platforms, a security update for Android devices is anticipated soon.
In the meantime, Galaxy users can reduce risk by adjusting Quick Share settings to limit sharing to contacts only.
