Are Smart Home Users at Risk from the Badbox 2.0 Botnet?

The FBI has issued a warning to smart home users about the Badbox 2.0 botnet, urging them to check their connected devices for signs of compromise. The agency highlighted that malware could be pre-installed on devices or introduced via necessary applications with backdoors during setup. Devices mainly manufactured in China, such as TV streaming devices, digital projectors, and other products, are particularly vulnerable. Once connected to home networks, these compromised IoT devices may become part of the botnet, which is used for malicious activities. Badbox 2.0, targeting Android-based products, is a significant threat, with millions of infected devices providing backdoor access to cybercriminals. Users are advised to avoid disabling Google Play Protect settings, steer clear of “unlocked” devices promising free content, and refrain from using unofficial app marketplaces. To reduce cyber risks, users should monitor home network traffic, check IoT devices for suspicious activity, keep all systems updated, and prioritize patching vulnerabilities.
