Are U.S. citizens at risk using dating apps in Mexico?

The U.S. Embassy and its consulates in Mexico have issued a warning to American citizens about the potential dangers of using dating apps in certain regions of Mexico, following reports of kidnappings. Areas such as Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Nayarit have seen incidents where U.S. citizens met individuals through these apps and were subsequently kidnapped, sometimes leading to extortion demands for their release. The alert advises caution in Jalisco and Nayarit, urging travelers to meet in public places, inform friends or family of their plans, and trust their instincts. A Level 3 travel advisory is already in place for Jalisco, recommending reconsideration of travel due to crime and kidnapping risks, while Nayarit is under a Level 2 advisory, suggesting increased caution.
