Around 100 trade unionists and activists gathered in Manchester for a conference titled “This Is Not Inevitable—Standing up to AI and Big Tech,” co-hosted by Campaign against Climate Change and the Greater Manchester Climate Justice Coalition. This event was part of a broader trade union climate action initiative. Discussions focused on AI’s role in monitoring employees, increasing workloads, and potentially causing mass layoffs. Shireen Asaw from United Tech and Allied Workers highlighted the trend of workers being replaced by AI, cautioning against the exaggerated claims of AI’s capabilities. She emphasized that AI is a predictive tool, not a conscious entity, and often serves as an excuse for job cuts. The conference also addressed AI’s environmental impact, with Owen Espley noting the significant energy consumption of data centers. Mary Stevens linked the rise of data centers to increased energy bills in Ireland, comparing them to fracking. Rory Gibson shared insights on efforts to prevent Palantir’s involvement in the NHS due to its controversial affiliations. Laurence Bouvard discussed actors’ opposition to unauthorized use of their likeness, inspired by US strikes. Participants debated whether all AI should be opposed or if some applications could be beneficial, with Shireen advocating for AI in hazardous work but stressing its non-neutrality.
