Are Ultra-Thin Phone Plans Being Abandoned Due to iPhone Air’s Poor Sales?

Apple’s iPhone Air 2 might become the sole ultra-thin flagship smartphone from a major brand, following the original model’s disappointing sales. Despite several price cuts, the iPhone Air barely achieved 700,000 unit activations. Similarly, a Chinese ultra-thin phone saw only 50,000 activations, leading to the likely cancellation of its successor. The iPhone Air, launched in September 2025, has faced commercial challenges, with minimal demand reported and significant production cuts. The industry’s response has been significant, with companies like Xiaomi, Vivo, and Samsung halting or cancelling their ultra-thin phone projects. Nevertheless, Apple reportedly plans to continue with at least two generations of the device. A revised iPhone Air 2 is expected in spring 2027, featuring improvements such as an additional rear camera, reduced weight, enhanced cooling, and increased battery capacity. Apple is also exploring new display technologies to enhance the device’s appeal.
