American tech giants, including OpenAI and Nvidia, are reportedly attempting to secure developers within their closed-source AI ecosystems by offering open-source tools in other parts of the technology stack. This strategy contrasts with Chinese companies like Alibaba Cloud and ByteDance, which have opted to open-source their AI models, allowing developers to freely download and enhance them. In the realm of AI, a tech stack encompasses both hardware, such as semiconductor chips, and software, including algorithms and frameworks. US firms have concentrated their open-source initiatives on AI development toolchains to promote the use of their proprietary AI models and hardware. For example, Nvidia introduced Dynamo, an inference platform optimized for large-scale AI models, which is presented as the “operating system of AI.” Although Dynamo is compatible with popular open-source AI frameworks like PyTorch, it is specifically designed to work with Nvidia’s advanced GPUs.
