Can Morocco Bridge the Digital Divide with Starlink?

Morocco is turning to Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite Internet service, to enhance Internet access in remote areas. This initiative, announced by the Minister Delegate for Digital Transition, Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, aims to bridge the digital divide by providing a subsidy of 2,500 dirhams to 4,000 households. Starlink promises fast and stable connections, with download speeds ranging from 100 to 500 Mbps and low latency. This project is part of the National High and Very High Broadband Plan, which has already connected over 10,640 rural areas between 2018 and 2024. The next phase will target an additional 1,800 areas, supported by the Universal Telecommunications Service Fund. As part of Morocco Digital 2030, the country aims to enhance its digitalization efforts and deploy 5G, with planned coverage for 25% of the population by 2026 and 70% by 2030.
