Samsung is exploring new DDI suppliers for its next-generation Galaxy S27 and S28 series to reduce dependence on its System LSI division, the current exclusive supplier of display driver ICs for Galaxy S flagship models, after its smartphone business recorded losses amid rising component costs.
According to a report, Samsung Display recently requested price proposals for DDIs for the Galaxy S28 Ultra from suppliers including Taiwan’s Novatek. A DDI is a chip that controls OLED pixels via thin-film transistors (TFTs).
If Samsung’s MX unit approves additional suppliers, the company could adopt a dual-source DDI strategy for the Galaxy S28 Ultra, with System LSI continuing to supply DDIs while firms such as Novatek provide extra chips.
DDI suppliers: Samsung seeks alternatives for flagship displays
Samsung is also considering diversifying DDI suppliers for the upcoming Galaxy S27 series. The 2027 Galaxy S flagship lineup may include four models: Galaxy S27, S27+, S27 Pro, and S27 Ultra. System LSI has been confirmed as the sole DDI supplier for the Ultra and Pro models, while supplier evaluations for the remaining models are currently underway with the possibility of diversification.
Supply chain moves and cost pressures
Samsung’s mid-range Galaxy A series already uses DDIs from multiple suppliers, including DB Global Chip, Anapass, Wonik D2I, and Novatek. The push to broaden DDI sourcing for the Galaxy S line comes as rising component costs have put pressure on the smartphone division; Samsung posted losses in its mobile business in Q2 2026 for the first time in its history and aims to pursue new strategies to reduce expenses and restore profitability.
