Did AI drive North American startup funding to record highs in early 2026?

In the first half of 2026, North American venture investment reached unprecedented levels, largely fueled by significant late-stage funding rounds for leading AI companies. Although the second quarter saw a slight decrease compared to the first, it still ranked as the second-highest in history, with substantial investments continuing to flow into prominent AI firms. Overall, U.S. and Canadian startups attracted an impressive $392 billion in investment during this period.

The second quarter alone accounted for $137.2 billion, marking a significant increase compared to previous records, with the exception of the first quarter. This surge in capital was primarily concentrated in large funding rounds rather than an increase in the number of deals, which remained below historical highs.

Late-stage investments dominated, with $101 billion allocated in the second quarter, driven by a massive $65 billion round for Anthropic, which is preparing for an IPO. Early-stage funding also saw a rise, totaling over $31 billion, with a notable $12 billion deal for Prometheus, an AI startup co-founded by Jeff Bezos.

Seed investment, however, experienced a decline, with $4.9 billion raised, though some unusually large rounds provided a boost. AI-focused startups received about 80% of the total investment across all stages, despite a slight drop from the first quarter.

The period also witnessed significant exits, including SpaceX’s historic IPO, raising $75 billion, and its subsequent $60 billion acquisition of Cursor. Other notable IPOs included Cerebras Systems and Quantinuum, while major acquisitions featured Eli Lilly’s purchase of Kelonia Therapeutics and Qualcomm’s acquisition of Modular.

As the landscape continues to evolve, the startup ecosystem anticipates further substantial developments, with companies like Anthropic and OpenAI hinting at potential public offerings with valuations nearing or exceeding $1 trillion. The question remains: which AI-driven startups will emerge as the biggest winners in this dynamic market?
