The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is selling better than Samsung expected, creating production bottlenecks, and a recent report says the proportion of existing iPhone users switching to Samsung’s latest foldables has doubled versus last year. Most of those switchers are in their teens, 20s and 30s.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 appeals to younger iPhone users
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 series have attracted a larger share of former iPhone owners compared with the launches of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7 last year, with the increase concentrated among younger buyers.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 design and popularity in Samsung’s lineup
Within Samsung’s new foldable lineup, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has been the most popular device. It offers a wider, passport-like aspect ratio, an ultra-thin and ultra-light design, and a large internal screen suited for watching videos.
Improved data transfer to ease switching
Google and Samsung jointly developed an improved data migration tool. The updated Smart Switch feature on Galaxy phones can transfer more types of data — including call logs, eSIMs, messages, passwords and passkeys — without requiring a cable connection.
Apple’s expected iPhone Ultra and price comparison
It remains to be seen how many of the new ex-iPhone users will stay with the Galaxy Z series after Apple’s first foldable iPhone, expected to be called the iPhone Ultra, is slated to go official on September 9, 2026; that model is reported likely to be in short supply for the first few months. Reports indicate the iPhone Ultra could cost between $2,100 and $2,300 in the US for the 256GB version, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at $1,899 in the US for the 256GB model.
