Galaxy Z Fold: A second wide foldable in 2027 could backfire

Rumors suggest Samsung may introduce a second wide Galaxy Z Fold model in 2027 alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 9, a move that could do more harm than good.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is Samsung’s first passport-style foldable, offering a wider form factor compared with the book-style Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra form factor. The device is reportedly performing very well in the market, with some reports suggesting Samsung has bumped up production by an additional one million units to meet demand. The Fold 8 benefits from novelty, flagship-level specifications and a wider aspect ratio that many users find more comfortable for content creation and consumption, although its cameras may leave room for improvement.

Why a second Galaxy Z Fold is tempting

Insiders and analysts arguing in favor of a second wide model say Samsung could capitalise on the Fold 8’s momentum by offering another device that targets a different price point. Launching two wide Fold models could also allow Samsung to contest multiple segments when Apple releases its first foldable iPhone, which is believed to use the book-style form factor.

Risks of launching another wide Fold

Critics warn that introducing a second wide model as soon as 2027 could backfire. Many potential buyers may remain on the sidelines for several generations to judge the lineup’s development, and offering two similar wide options while those buyers are still undecided could be counterproductive. Positioning choices carry risk: if Samsung follows an FE route and makes a stripped-down, cheaper wide Fold, it could flop like the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE did; if it prices the new wide model above the Galaxy Z Fold 9, it would sit close to the Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra and risk cannibalising sales. Charging more would also require delivering substantially more value, potentially pushing specs closer to the Ultra variant.

Expanding the range so rapidly could make Samsung’s foldable portfolio appear cluttered, with two Galaxy Z Fold 9 models, a Galaxy Z Flip 9, a Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra and even a possible Galaxy Z TriFold launching within months of each other. By contrast, Apple may stick with a single foldable model, preserving a simpler choice for mainstream buyers.

There will be a time and place for further expansion of Samsung’s foldable lineup, particularly for wider form factors. The central caution is strategic patience: Samsung should avoid sacrificing long-term positioning for short-term expediency.
