A few months ago, Samsung announced it would be investing as much as $260 billion in South Korea’s Honam region to build a new Gwangju memory chip cluster, and the company is targeting the first mass production run at the new facility by 2030.
Gwangju memory chip cluster: infrastructure push ahead of 2028 ground-breaking
Gwangju is now racing to get everything in place to make that timeline possible. The city must build out water and power infrastructure by next year, a step described as necessary to enable Samsung to break ground on the new memory chip plants in 2028.
New facilities will significantly expand production capacity.
Samsung is not the only player in the memory space setting up in the region: SK Hynix has promised a similarly massive investment in the Honam area.
