Baidu has announced significant advancements in its AI technology, with its X1.1 reasoning model reportedly surpassing the performance of DeepSeek’s R1 and matching the capabilities of OpenAI’s GPT-5 and Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro. At a developer conference in Beijing, Baidu’s chief technology officer, Wang Haifeng, highlighted improvements in reasoning, deep thinking, and multimodal abilities, leading to a 34.8% increase in knowledge accuracy. These enhancements are attributed to a mixed reinforcement learning process. The X1.1 model is now accessible to corporate clients through Baidu’s cloud platform, while individual users can explore it via the Ernie Bot website and app. This development underscores the intensifying competition in China’s AI market, where companies like DeepSeek and Alibaba Cloud are making notable progress in open-source AI models.
