Has China become the global leader in AI model releases?

China has emerged as the global leader in artificial intelligence, releasing 1,509 large AI models, which is the highest number worldwide. This accounts for a significant portion of the 3,755 models launched globally. The announcement was made during the 2025 World AI Conference in Shanghai. China has developed a robust AI industrial system that includes both foundational infrastructure and sector-specific applications. The China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) reports that the country hosts over 5,100 AI companies, making up about 15% of the global total. Additionally, China is home to 71 AI unicorns, representing roughly 26% of the world’s 271. Yu Xiaohui, president of CAICT, highlighted the rapid development of foundational large models and new technological approaches this year, indicating significant potential for achieving Artificial General Intelligence. He described a positive development environment in China, driven by leading companies, rising unicorns, specialized firms, and emerging startups. AI-related revenue from over 300 listed companies in China constitutes about 70% of the nation’s total AI industry. The top innovation areas for Chinese AI unicorns include large models, autonomous driving, intelligent robots, business intelligence applications, and AI computing chips. China’s rapidly expanding AI industry is seen as a key driver for high-quality economic and social development. The World AI Conference, themed “Global Solidarity in the AI Era,” concluded with participation from high-level representatives from over 40 countries and international organizations.
