Apple has released HomePod software 27.2 for the HomePod and HomePod mini, introducing a new Sound Glow visual effect, Mac audio support, and expanded Apple TV surround capabilities.
HomePod 27.2: Sound Glow and visual updates
HomePod software 27.2 brings Sound Glow to the HomePod, HomePod mini, and the incoming HomePod mini 2. Sound Glow lights up the top of a HomePod or HomePod mini with colors that pulse in sync with the media playing; the feature draws colors from album artwork and works with songs, podcasts, and Appleās ambient music feature.
Surround sound, Mac output and touch lock
The update adds support for using HomePods as the default speaker for a Mac, providing a responsive and persistent AirPlay connection. It also enables home theater surround sound with Apple TV 4K (4th generation) by allowing four HomePod speakers to be used as an immersive listening setup. That home theater configuration requires matching front and rear pairs of HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd generation). A new Lock Controls option lets users disable the touch controls on top of the HomePod to prevent accidental taps from pausing music, skipping tracks, or changing volume.
The release notes state the update also brings enhancements to the Apple Music, Podcasts, and AirPlay experiences on tvOS, expands captions to more content, adds the ability to block individual apps, and includes bug fixes and security updates for Apple TV 4K.
HomePod software 27.2 can be installed from the Home app on iPhone, iPad, or Mac by tapping the More button, choosing Home Settings, and selecting Software Update. If automatic updates are enabled, the new HomePod software will install automatically.
The HomePod mini 2 is scheduled to launch on Friday, October 30, and the new Apple TV 4K is due on November 13.
