Transforma Insights has published a report commissioned by Vodafone IoT that examines how the evolution of IoT connectivity is reshaping fleet management, with a focus on 5G, eSIM, non-terrestrial networks (NTN) and the growing impact of artificial intelligence.

Fleet management is no longer solely about geolocation and telemetry — it is evolving into a decision platform powered by advanced analytics and AI. The report highlights how traditional tracking systems are becoming tools that optimize routing, predict maintenance needs, and influence operations in real time as vehicles incorporate more sensors and on‑board processing.

IoT connectivity under pressure: network diversity and device lifecycles
Fleet-management solutions depend heavily on cellular connectivity. But advances in mobile technologies are introducing new challenges: refarming of 2G/3G networks and a proliferation of connectivity options with varying characteristics (longevity, cost, coverage, power consumption, reliability). The report stresses the need for fleet operators to proactively manage device lifecycles — a requirement that affects hardware design, replacement strategies and long‑term connectivity planning.

5G, eSIM and NTN: how these technologies change the game
5G brings capabilities that can enrich fleet-management services: greater bandwidth, improved reliability, network slicing and evolutions such as Cellular V2X. At the same time, non‑terrestrial networks (NTN) incorporated into cellular standards extend communications beyond terrestrial coverage, widening connectivity for mobile assets.

The arrival of eSIM and Remote SIM Provisioning — notably the GSMA SGP.32 specification — introduces a new operational paradigm: longer device lifetimes, more flexible network selection and reduced logistics associated with physical SIM cards. For fleets operating across multiple markets, these capabilities directly address persistent challenges such as roaming restrictions, cross‑border compliance and continuity of connectivity over long equipment lifecycles.
