How Are Edge AI Appliances Transforming Security Monitoring?

Edge AI appliances, initially designed for enterprise clients with global security operations centers, faced challenges when applied to smaller sites lacking onsite security. These end-users required compact appliances equipped with standard analytics, such as verifying PPE use on job sites or identifying uniformed personnel delivering packages for multifamily clients.

The introduction of edge AI appliances by companies like Vaido in 2018 marked a turning point. Originally offering large-scale analytics solutions, Vaido developed smaller appliances suitable for remote deployments, providing analytics directly to edge cameras. Although adoption was slow, recent reductions in bandwidth, cloud connectivity, and chipset costs have made edge AI more accessible.

Today, edge AI appliances are gaining traction. Manufacturers like Camect and Hanwha Vision have joined the market, offering solutions that integrate analytics without specific camera requirements. These appliances are particularly beneficial for monitoring companies overseeing multiple locations with diverse camera setups.

Edge AI appliances offer two main advantages: pre-set analytic packages and standardized appliances. Pre-set packages allow clients to implement analytics without relying on specific camera vendors, enabling the use of older analog cameras if necessary. Standardized appliances ensure compliance across all monitored cameras, streamlining operator training and reducing manual video reviews.

Monitoring companies are increasingly integrating edge AI appliances into their systems, enhancing proactive responses and minimizing false alarms. As this technology trend grows, more edge AI solutions are expected to emerge, offering both on-premise and cloud-based analytics.
