As major sporting events approach, Morocco is ramping up its investments in telecommunications infrastructure, particularly in preparation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup. The goal is to ensure world-class connectivity. However, the country must avoid the trap of underutilized infrastructure post-events. Experts emphasize the importance of designing these infrastructures for sustainable use, preventing them from becoming “white elephants.” It is crucial to consider the utility of fiber optic networks, 5G, and other technologies beyond the competitions, adapting them to local needs and transforming them into development catalysts.
Having already invested in modern stadiums in Marrakech, Tangier, and Agadir, Morocco now needs to ensure that these facilities are versatile and used year-round for various events, whether they be sporting, cultural, or corporate. This approach would not only maximize infrastructure utilization but also generate revenue and support the sports and events industries.
Moreover, connectivity must also be extended to underserved regions to promote digital inclusion and local development. This could transform rural areas into hubs of innovation and new digital practices, thereby strengthening Morocco’s position as a leader in sports soft power in Africa.
