How did a 16-year-old Assam schoolgirl make her mark at an international AI conference?

A 16-year-old schoolgirl from Assam, Huma Abia Kanta, has made a significant achievement by presenting her research paper at an international conference focused on artificial intelligence and machine learning. A student of Royal Global School in Guwahati, Huma showcased her work at the “Advancement and Innovation: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning” conference held in a hybrid format at Nakhchivan State University in Azerbaijan. Her research, titled “ML-Based Prediction of Phycocyanin Purity,” examines the use of machine learning models to predict pigment purity levels, crucial for sustainable bio-resource industries. By evaluating six different regressors, her model achieved a mean absolute error significantly lower than the standard lab deviation.

Huma’s participation in this conference places her among the youngest Indians to present at such a prestigious international AI forum. Her paper is set to be published in esteemed international journals indexed in Scopus. Additionally, she has authored another paper on Sanskrit phonology, which will be presented at an upcoming regional conference on natural language processing. Beyond her academic pursuits, Huma is the founder of “desicodes,” an educational startup aimed at promoting coding in local languages through an Assamese-Python transpiler. She has also collaborated with Dr. Purnima Devi Barman’s “Hargila Army” to digitize motifs of the endangered Greater Adjutant Stork for handloom saris, merging ecology, technology, and culture. Huma credits her success to the guidance of her mentor, Dr. Ankur Pan Saikia, and Dr. Arup Kr. Mukhopadhyay, Director of Royal Global School.
