How does the ‘Lion Rock’ chip enhance Hong Kong’s semiconductor status?

A new processor named after Hong Kong’s iconic Lion Rock mountain has been launched by a Shanghai-based start-up, significantly boosting the city’s position in the semiconductor industry. The chip, developed by StarFive and supported by the Hong Kong Investment Corporation, is designed to meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence computing power. Mass production is set to begin soon following initial orders. StarFive’s CEO, Thomas Xu Tao, emphasized the chip’s independence and its use of the RISC-V open-source architecture, aiming to make it a reality in the AI era and promote China’s chip innovations globally. Compatible with Intel servers, the chip has already attracted clients such as xFusion, a Huawei Technologies spin-off. RISC-V represents the latest generation of open-source CPU architecture, offering developers flexibility in designing integrated circuits.
