As artificial intelligence continues to gain momentum worldwide, Hong Kong is positioning itself as a key player in technological innovation. The Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Cyberport, is highlighting nine promising companies and their AI solutions at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai.
The WAIC, which began in 2018, has become a significant event in the global tech industry. This year’s theme, “Global Solidarity in the AI Era,” underscores the importance of international collaboration. Sunny Chai Ngai-chiu, Chairman of HKSTP, is optimistic about Hong Kong’s role as a hub for global innovation, particularly in advancing China’s AI capabilities on the world stage.
Yu Hongyu, co-director of the Hong Kong Space Robotics and Energy Centre, will participate in a panel discussion at the conference. The Centre is contributing to China’s Chang’e 8 mission by developing a multifunctional lunar surface robot. This initiative represents Hong Kong’s largest aerospace research effort, uniting five local universities and collaborating with partners from mainland China and abroad.
Digital Domain, known for its work on films like Titanic and The Avengers, is also participating in the conference with its AI-driven content creation platform, “AI DOMAIN.” The company is expanding its R&D efforts in Hong Kong, focusing on AI virtual humans for various sectors, including education and hospitality.
Westwell, a developer of AI-driven logistics solutions, will showcase its new autonomous tractor and intelligent model system at the WAIC. The company views Hong Kong as an ideal testing ground for its technologies, given the city’s status as a major logistics hub.
Hong Kong’s strategic location and commitment to innovation have attracted global companies to establish their headquarters and R&D centers in the city. The ongoing developments at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks aim to enhance the city’s AI infrastructure and attract top global talent, fostering a convergence of Eastern and Western technology and culture.
