The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has pledged support for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in its efforts to combat drug-related issues in Nigeria. This collaboration aims to provide alternative livelihoods for illicit drug producers and agricultural opportunities for rehabilitated drug users to prevent relapse. NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, highlighted the importance of linking drug control with national and food security, noting the high prevalence of cannabis abuse in the country. To address this, the NDLEA is promoting “Alternative Development,” encouraging cannabis growers to cultivate legal crops instead. This initiative has garnered support from the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs. The agency is considering promoting the cultivation of crops like artemisia annua, known for its potential economic benefits and use in malaria treatment. Additionally, the NDLEA seeks to integrate rehabilitated individuals into agricultural programs to ensure sustainable livelihoods and prevent relapse.
