Can Rockland’s Transit System Be Improved?

Rockland County offers various transit options, yet none provide a frequent, reliable, and direct route to Manhattan. This deficiency has led many residents to prefer driving, especially for irregular work hours or personal travel. The county’s transit system includes several flawed services:

NJ Transit operates the sole passenger rail service, which is limited by single tracking and indirect routes, necessitating transfers in Secaucus or Hoboken. Enhancements like a second track and the proposed Bergen Loop could significantly improve frequency and travel times.

Coach USA’s bus routes, the only direct link to Manhattan, are marred by a lack of infrastructure, such as identifiable stops and live tracking, making them difficult for new riders. A state takeover could improve service quality.

HudsonLink, originally intended as a rail line, now functions as a bus service connecting Rockland to Westchester. Despite decent frequency, it suffers from traffic delays. Implementing bus lanes could enhance its reliability.

The Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry offers a scenic, traffic-free route across the Hudson but is limited to rush hours and vulnerable to weather disruptions. Expanding its schedule and ensuring year-round operation could make it more viable.

Transport of Rockland (TOR) provides local bus service but is hindered by inefficient routes and unreliable schedules. A comprehensive overhaul is needed to modernize the system and improve rider experience.

Rockland County deserves better transit infrastructure to reduce congestion and pollution and support economic growth. However, progress is stalled by resource constraints and lack of representation on the MTA board. Continuous advocacy is crucial to drive change and achieve a world-class transit system.
