ICLR submissions surge to roughly 50,000 abstracts before deadline

ICLR 2027 has already attracted roughly 50,000 abstracts with the submission deadline still a week away, compared with about 19,500 valid submissions to ICLR 2026. Some of the new abstracts are likely hedging bets while authors wait on NeurIPS results and plan to withdraw if accepted there, so the final total should be lower but still well above last year.

Observers point to broader AI hype and corporate research spending—where pay is sometimes tied to publication records—as contributors to the surge. The biggest factor is probably that AI makes it much faster to crank out papers, and a NeurIPS analysis found that authors used AI heavily to write their submissions.

ICLR submissions strain peer review

ICLR 2026 already struggled with low-quality AI-generated submissions and reviews that eroded trust in peer review. Authors submitted AI-generated papers packed with fabricated citations, and reviewers turned to AI just to keep up with the volume. With an even larger influx this year, expect those complaints to get louder.
