iPhone 18 Pro Dynamic Island Shrinks to Support Three Live Activities

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro will feature a narrower Dynamic Island that can display three Live Activities at once, Mark Gurman reports. The revised “smaller and improved” Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will let users “toggle between three live tasks” at the top of the screen, up from the current two-activity limit.

iPhone 18 Pro Dynamic Island and interface changes

The Dynamic Island change represents the primary interface update: previously, devices have only shown up to two Live Activities simultaneously, a design in place since the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max launched in 2022. The narrower island on the 18 Pro models is intended to make room for that additional activity slot.

Other exterior and color changes are expected to be modest. Gurman says the iPhone 18 Pro models will look similar to the iPhone 17 Pro models, with a new “burgundy red” color option reportedly replacing Cosmic Orange. Sky blue and Silver have also been mentioned as possible color choices.

Internal upgrades detailed in the report include a new A20 Pro chip manufactured on TSMC’s 2nm process, longer battery life, and a revamped vapor chamber cooling system. Camera hardware is also said to gain a mechanical aperture lens for more precise depth of field control and improved low-light performance; that mechanical aperture may be exclusive to the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time later today.
