iPhone Duo Touch ID Tip: Register the Lower Index Finger for Faster Unlock

An iPhone Duo owner posted on Reddit a Touch ID tip they describe as “arguably better than Face ID.” The suggestion is to register the lowest part of your index finger — not the fingertip pad — so that this section naturally contacts the phone’s side button when you pick it up and unlock it as you lift the device.

How this iPhone Duo Touch ID trick works

According to the original poster, that lower segment of the finger rests against the side button during a normal pickup, enabling the phone to unlock during the motion rather than requiring a separate press or repositioning. The tip has since been shared on other online forums, where at least one additional iPhone Duo owner reported it worked for them.

Grip styles vary between users, so the technique is not guaranteed to work for everyone. Users who want to try it can register extra parts of their fingers by going to Settings ➝ Touch ID & Passcode and adding additional fingerprints — and, as the original post notes, more registered prints can improve recognition.
