Amazon has filed with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to deploy a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation of 5,105 satellites aimed at providing voice, data, messaging and emergency services to compatible devices — including enhancements for iPhone satellite features.
A 5,105-satellite network designed for global coverage
The proposed constellation would consist of 5,105 satellites distributed across five distinct orbital “shells.” Three shells are intended to prioritize coverage of densely populated regions, while the remaining two focus on high-latitude and polar coverage. Amazon says the system will deliver satellite cellular service where terrestrial cell towers are unavailable, with improvements in speed and throughput.
Use of Globalstar spectrum and device compatibility
The project will rely on spectrum currently held by Globalstar, the company Amazon is in the process of acquiring. Amazon states the network will reach any mobile device equipped with a satellite-capable chipset. These details are included in its FCC filing and in Amazon’s public disclosures about the proposal.
Partnership with Apple and Globalstar’s role
Apple already uses Globalstar spectrum for iPhone and Apple Watch Ultra 3 satellite features. Amazon and Apple have agreed that, post-transaction, Globalstar will operate alongside Amazon’s Leo network, with both Globalstar and Amazon Leo supporting Apple’s future satellite services. Amazon also notes an existing agreement with Apple for Leo to provide satellite services to supported iPhones and Apple Watches — including Emergency SOS via satellite, Messages, Find My and Roadside Assistance via satellite — and to collaborate on future services.
Regulatory timeline and deployment schedule
Amazon has submitted the FCC application and is awaiting regulatory approval. The company expects to begin launching the first satellites in 2028. The Globalstar acquisition is expected to close in 2027, subject to required regulatory clearances.
What this means
Amazon’s filing outlines a clear ambition to expand satellite-based mobile coverage and performance by leveraging Globalstar’s spectrum and existing industry agreements, including the one with Apple. The plan’s next steps hinge on regulator decisions and the actual buildout timeline.
