Is Apple ending new enrollments in the iPhone Upgrade Program?

Apple is reportedly preparing to stop accepting new enrollments in the iPhone Upgrade Program following next week’s launch of a new plan called “Apple Upgrade.” It remains unclear whether existing iPhone Upgrade Program members will be allowed to keep their current terms until their contracts expire or will be migrated to the new offering.

What is the iPhone Upgrade Program?
The iPhone Upgrade Program is Apple’s device-financing plan that lets customers get a new iPhone in exchange for monthly payments. The plan has typically included AppleCare+, often with optional Theft & Loss coverage, making it a bundled option for people who want device protection and regular upgrades rolled into a single monthly bill.

What’s different about Apple Upgrade?
The forthcoming Apple Upgrade plan is expected to change one key element: AppleCare+ with Theft & Loss will not be bundled into the base offer. That means the advertised monthly payment for Apple Upgrade should be lower than the iPhone Upgrade Program’s rate when that program included full AppleCare+ protections. AppleCare+ will still be available for purchase separately, with payment choices that may include one-time, annual, or monthly options.

What this means for current subscribers
Apple has not yet confirmed how it will handle existing iPhone Upgrade Program subscribers. At present, it’s uncertain whether those customers will be allowed to complete their contracts under the current terms or will be asked to migrate to Apple Upgrade and obtain AppleCare+ separately. If migration is required, affected customers will need to decide whether to keep an integrated plan (if permitted) or buy protection separately from AppleCare+.

Toward more modular offers
Separating AppleCare+ from the financing plan would make Apple’s financing more modular and could lower monthly payments for customers who don’t want bundled insurance. At the same time, it could complicate apples-to-apples comparisons of total cost for buyers who prefer an all-in-one protection package.

What to watch for
Apple is expected to publish official details when Apple Upgrade goes live. Until then, current subscribers should watch for communications from Apple about their account status and upcoming changes. For anyone considering an upgrade, compare the total monthly or annual cost of financing plus separately purchased AppleCare+ versus the previous bundled approach.

Bottom line
Apple’s Apple Upgrade launch looks like a move toward greater flexibility and lower advertised monthly payments by unbundling AppleCare+. The key unknown is how existing iPhone Upgrade Program members will be treated—so keep an eye on Apple’s announcement next week, check your Apple account or email for updates, and contact Apple Support or an Apple Store if you need clarification or want to evaluate your options.
