Is Martin Scorsese Betraying Artists with His AI Venture?

Martin Scorsese is under fire after announcing his involvement with an AI tech company focused on the film industry. The acclaimed director has joined Black Forest Labs, a firm specializing in text-to-speech generative AI, as an advisor. Scorsese expressed his interest in blending technology with storytelling to enhance audience experiences, noting that cinema is still a relatively young medium that must evolve. He mentioned that AI tools could help him communicate his vision more effectively to his team. However, this move has sparked backlash from the film community, with critics like artist Karla Ortiz accusing him of undermining storyboard artists’ livelihoods. TV director Samuel Deats also criticized the use of AI for storyboarding, arguing it disrespects the work of artists. Others have pointed out Scorsese’s previous skepticism towards AI in cinema. Despite the criticism, Scorsese is not alone in the industry; other filmmakers like Darren Aronofsky and James Cameron have also faced scrutiny for their engagement with AI technologies.
