Is Nigeria’s Education Data Platform Under Cyberattack?

Concerns are rising over a potential cybersecurity breach affecting Nigeria’s Education Management Information System (NEMIS), a crucial digital platform for the country’s education sector. As of 11:20 a.m. yesterday, the website displayed a warning suggesting that attackers might be trying to gather information from visitors. This suspected breach has sparked questions about the security of this vital database, which is essential for planning, policy development, and monitoring educational activities nationwide. NEMIS, managed by the Federal Ministry of Education, compiles data from various educational institutions, including public and private school records, student enrollment numbers, teacher profiles, and infrastructure details. The platform also tracks key indicators such as access to education, retention, and completion rates, which help policymakers assess performance and allocate resources. According to data analyst Joseph Dokhare, the “connection is not private” alert on the site might result from not adhering to specific security protocols. He likened the situation to lacking security measures at home, emphasizing that exposure does not necessarily mean an attack has occurred but rather a warning to address security gaps.
