Announced at the Unlocking AI for Public Good Conference in Philadelphia, this collaboration aims to enhance AI policy, strategy, and implementation within the state. The conference, co-hosted by the University of Pennsylvania and Governor Josh Shapiro’s office, gathered government leaders, academics, and industry experts to explore the responsible use of generative AI in sectors like education, healthcare, banking, and public safety. Governor Shapiro emphasized Pennsylvania’s pioneering role in AI, likening it to the state’s leadership during past agricultural and industrial revolutions. He highlighted the state’s strategic connections with research institutions, the private sector, and government to responsibly harness AI’s potential.
Key figures from the Shapiro Administration participated in the event, including Secretary of Administration Neil Weaver and Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen. The collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania builds on Governor Shapiro’s record of AI governance, including an executive order establishing strong standards for AI use in state government and a pilot program with OpenAI to enhance employee productivity. Pennsylvania has also been recognized as a top state for AI readiness, with significant private investments, such as Amazon’s $20 billion commitment to AI and cloud computing campuses, promising substantial job creation.
