Is Samsung Considering BOE OLED Panels for the Galaxy S27 Base Model?

Samsung Electronics is considering using displays from Chinese manufacturer BOE for its upcoming Galaxy S27 series, potentially ending Samsung Display’s exclusive supply of OLED panels for the flagship line. The decision may depend on BOE’s competitive pricing, with reports indicating a $5 discount per unit compared to Samsung Display. The MX division has already requested information from BOE, and initial sample tests have been positive.

This move is partly driven by the current market dynamics, where Chinese smartphone makers have reduced production due to rising memory chip costs, leaving panel manufacturers like BOE with excess capacity. By partnering with BOE, Samsung could benefit from lower production costs, taking advantage of BOE’s need to secure large orders to maintain factory operations.

BOE has overcome previous technical barriers, including a patent dispute with Samsung Display, allowing it to use specific diamond-pixel layouts. With the Galaxy S27 expected to have similar display specifications to its predecessor, integrating BOE panels should be straightforward.

This development is causing concern among South Korean component suppliers, as Samsung Display’s local partners could see reduced profitability. Samsung has already diversified its supply chain for lower-end models like the Galaxy A57, sourcing panels from both Samsung Display and CSOT. Applying this strategy to premium devices could further reduce costs.

While BOE has previously supplied panels for mid-range models like the Galaxy A73, securing a flagship order would mark a significant shift in trust. If the Galaxy S27 base model uses BOE panels, consumers may scrutinize potential visual differences compared to the Samsung Display-equipped S27 Ultra.
