Starting this Wednesday, November 19, Illinois residents will be able to add their driver’s license or state ID to the Wallet app on their iPhone and Apple Watch. This new feature offers a convenient and contactless method for displaying proof of identity or age at selected airports, businesses, and apps. The Apple Wallet ID will be accepted at Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway airports, as well as at Lambert airport in St. Louis, Missouri. Additionally, Illinois’ Secretary of State’s office is launching a free Mobile ID Verifier app for businesses to verify age for restricted purchases like alcohol. This app will be available in the App Store starting tomorrow. To activate the feature, users need to open the Wallet app, tap the plus sign, and follow the instructions for adding a driver’s license or ID card. The feature requires an iPhone 8 or later running iOS 16.5 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later with watchOS 9.5 or later. Currently, 12 states and Puerto Rico offer this feature, with more states expected to join in the future. Travelers are advised to check TSA checkpoint signage to confirm feature availability.
