Samsung’s premium phones have seen significant improvements in longevity and performance, thanks to enhanced firmware support and build quality. As a result, owning a Galaxy phone that’s a couple of years old doesn’t pose a performance issue. By 2025, the Galaxy S23 Ultra remains a strong performer. However, newer Samsung models often come with exclusive features that older hardware cannot support. One such feature is the Always on Display (AOD) wallpaper, introduced with the Galaxy S24 series, which distinguishes the latest flagships from their predecessors.
While the AOD wallpaper might seem trivial, it becomes an integral part of the user experience, offering a dim version of the lock screen wallpaper behind the AOD clock. Unfortunately, for Galaxy S23 Ultra users, this feature will remain out of reach due to hardware limitations, specifically the absence of an LTPO backplane.
Despite its appeal, the AOD wallpaper alone is not a compelling reason to upgrade from the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The device continues to perform admirably, and the absence of this feature is not a significant drawback, especially for those who haven’t experienced it before.
For those considering an upgrade, it’s more worthwhile to focus on other enhancements in newer models, such as improved brightness and the anti-reflective Corning Gorilla Armor glass, which enhance visibility in bright conditions. These upgrades offer tangible benefits that might justify the switch more than the AOD wallpaper.
