Is Venezuela’s airspace becoming a security risk for U.S. flights?

On December 16, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a safety alert concerning the Maiquetía Flight Information Region, which encompasses Venezuelan airspace and nearby areas. The FAA advised air operators to exercise extreme caution due to worsening safety conditions and increased military activity in and around Venezuela. These developments pose potential risks to aircraft during flights, as well as to those on the ground at airports. U.S. civil aviation operators are encouraged to check for additional security threat information on the FAA’s website and to notify planned flights into the region 72 hours in advance. Additionally, any security incidents during operations in this area should be reported to the FAA’s Washington Operations Center. The alert is effective from December 16, 2025, to February 19, 2026, amid rising regional tensions and reports of military activities near Venezuelan territory. As of now, Venezuelan aeronautical authorities have not officially responded to the FAA’s warning.
