Is WhatsApp introducing a green dot to indicate online status?

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that visually indicates when a contact is online. This feature, currently available in the beta version for iPhone, adds a green dot to a contact’s profile picture, visible only when the contact is active in the app. The dot disappears as soon as the user goes offline, with updates occurring in real time. Initially launched on Android, the green dot is now being tested in TestFlight for iOS users. At present, the indicator appears only on the chat info screen, accessible by tapping a contact’s name at the top of a conversation. It is not yet visible in the chat list or conversation view, but future updates could change this. The feature respects WhatsApp’s privacy settings, ensuring that users who hide their last seen and online status remain invisible. The beta version for iOS 26.26.10.72 includes this indicator, available to select beta testers, with a broader rollout anticipated soon. There’s no confirmed date for its release in the stable version.
