Apple has introduced the new MacBook Air featuring the M5 chip, which brings enhanced wireless connectivity, increased base storage, and a more powerful charger, while phasing out the M4 model. The M5 MacBook Air is priced at $1,099 for the 13-inch version and $1,299 for the 15-inch, marking a $100 rise from the M4 models. This new model offers double the base storage, now at 512GB, with Apple claiming the new SSD provides twice the read and write speeds. Educational discounts are available, typically reducing the price by at least $100.
The primary advancement in the M5 is its chip, which offers up to 15% faster multithreaded CPU performance, 30% better overall graphics performance, and 45% faster ray tracing. Additionally, it boasts a 27.5% increase in unified memory bandwidth. Apple has also highlighted specific improvements in AI-driven applications, including over four times the peak GPU compute performance for AI tasks and significantly faster processing speeds in various applications.
Architectural enhancements in the M5 include a dedicated Neural Accelerator in every GPU core, new developer APIs, and an upgraded ray tracing engine. The memory bandwidth has increased from 120 GB/s to 153 GB/s, thanks to the transition to a more advanced 3nm process. The M5 also introduces the N1 wireless chip, supporting Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
For users engaged in AI inference, complex 3D rendering, or GPU-intensive tasks, the M5 offers significant performance gains. However, for everyday activities like browsing and media playback, the difference from the M4 is negligible. For new buyers, the M5 is a more future-proof choice, offering doubled base storage and better handling of evolving on-device AI workloads, making it a more valuable long-term investment.
