Samsung is preparing a major redesign of the SmartThings Android app that adopts the One UI 9.0 design language, introducing a pill-shaped floating tab bar, dynamic per-location wallpapers and other interface changes.
SmartThings navigation and design
The update replaces the current navigation with a pill-shaped floating tab bar that contains five sections: Home, Devices, Life, Routines and Menu. The redesign aligns SmartThings’ visual language with other One UI apps that received One UI 8.0 and 8.5 updates, while SmartThings itself did not receive those earlier improvements.
Home screen, live wallpapers and suggestions
The Home screen will feature a dynamic background that changes like a live wallpaper according to the selected location and the time of day (morning, daytime, evening and night). The app will include nine preloaded live wallpapers and will allow users to use a custom image from the device gallery or camera. Different wallpapers can be set for different locations. A SmartThings Now card will appear near the top of the Home tab to surface suggestions for SmartThings features the user has not tried; this card can be enabled or disabled.
Widgets and core sections
SmartThings will offer three widget types: Device Control, Screen Device Control and Routines. The Devices tab remains largely unchanged aside from the new dynamic background and retains the existing room-switching behavior. The Life section groups lifestyle-related features such as Clothing Care, Energy, Food, Home Care and Music Sync, and these cards can be rearranged by the user. The Routines tab is split into Discover and My Routines: My Routines lists the user’s automations, while Discover shows automations popular with other SmartThings users.
Timing
No release date has been confirmed. Because the redesign’s visual language matches One UI 9.0, the update is expected to arrive after the stable One UI 9.0 rollout begins for eligible Galaxy phones.
