Samsung has filed a patent earlier this year for a spam call handling system that would reject spam calls before they are connected to a phone, preventing alerts or screen wake-ups.
How Samsung’s spam calls system works
When an incoming call is detected, the phone first checks the number against the device’s block list before the call is actually connected. Because this check is performed prior to connection, the phone does not alert the user or light the screen. If the number is found on the blocked list, the device immediately sends a rejection message to the cellular network and the call is never connected.
According to the patent, this approach differs from existing systems that perform blocking after the call connects, when the user can already be disturbed.
Benefits of rejecting spam calls before connection
The patent describes additional advantages: eliminating alerts and screen wake-ups, reducing processing on the device, lowering battery drain and cutting down on unwanted notifications.
